Prior to joining the university ranks, I spent six years teaching school physical education to students just like yours. My most vivid memories of teaching include playing on the playground equipment with students before school, during recess and even as a part of my classes. While I taught a unit on playground safety and fair play on the playground to my students, I always dreamed that I could have had the opportunity to design my own playground that incorporated safety and fun, along with the fitness goals I wanted to help my students achieve. Imagine the educational opportunities if I could have used the playground to enhance my curriculum. I always felt that focusing on the development of five components of adolescent physical fitness (hand-eye coordination, balance, dexterity, cardiovascular health and large muscle group development) on the playground could vastly help me in meeting my standards and benchmarks outlined in the curriculum.
Sincerely,
Joe Deutsch, Ph.D
